Do you have a dream? As a child growing up on a small farm, I dreamed of the kind of town I would live in when I grew up. There would be lots of lights from the buildings in the night, beautiful flowers adorning the streets, and lots of activities to do on the weekend. I made so many plans of how I could make my surroundings more beautiful in this magical town.
As I grew from small child with lots of exciting dreams to a young mother with lots of big responsibilities, the dreams began to fade. I began to fall into the trap of bad mouthing my surroundings, blaming everyone but me for the way things were in the town I lived in. Gone were the dreams of beautiful flowers adorning the streets, glowing lights shining out like beacons to weary travelers coming home. Gone were thoughts of ways to make the town a place I would want to raise my children. They were all replaced with thoughts of paying bills and keeping up with children. I was in survival mode.
And then — a few years ago I bought a business in downtown Grenada and started looking at the town through the eyes of the long lost child. Serving on the revitalization committee for downtown Grenada I began once again to envision the city as it could be. Practical now, though, I wondered where on earth we would get the money to make it happen.
Then I learned of the Grenada Community Foundation and its mission to improve the quality of life of Grenada county by working with and through its citizens.
I found a place where I could be a part of the solution — where my dreams of that long forgotten magical place could re-emerge. GCF’s Grenada Gives 365 allows my $1.00 a day (30.00 a month ) to make a difference in our community, by pooling my money with that of others. The funds are are added up yearly, grant proposals from Grenada projects solicited, and every sinlge person who gave votes on which projects will receive funding. The Foundation keeps a portion of the money in the Community Leadership Fund, to fund future projects.
I challenge you to find the small child within you, and tap your dreams of the world you wanted then to live in. Find out how much fun it is to join your neighbors to change the world, with no politicians involved. Make a commitment to the town where you are raising your children or the town of your birth by giving $1.00 or more a day to Grenada Gives 365. Become a child again with me and let’s have a ball making Grenada the greatest county on earth.
