Celebrating GG365 Awards, what an awesome experience!

woods9853web_4xGrenada Gives 365 held its second annual GG365 Voting Celebration on April 22, and the packed room was alive with excitement and anticipation.  Eight nonprofit finalists competed for one of the five  $2, 000.00 grants to be awarded and four high school senior finalists competed for one scholarship for $1,000.00 to the college of choice.

How did the nonprofits and seniors get to be finalists and what does it matter to me? Being a member (what GG365 calls their donors) gives you the privilege of deciding, along with other members, who will be awarded the grants and scholarship.  GCF requests grant proposals from nonprofits that are working to impact the community at large. Applications are accepted between February and March each year.  The scholarship was GG365’s first annual scholarship and seniors from Grenada High School and Kirk Academy were encouraged to submit a 1200 word essay on how they will use a college education to improve the world we live in.

As we sat and listened to each nonprofit talk about the projects dear to their hearts and the seniors deliver their essays, it was hard to choose because all deserved to win.  While members voted and tallies were gathered, everyone feasted on a wonderful buffet from Orleans’ Bistro, while enjoying the camaraderie of friends and neighbors.

And then, the moment arrived.  All votes were tallied and it was time to announce the winners.  The five receiving $2,000.00 grants were 100 Black Men of Grenada, Grenada Food Pantry, Grenada Adult Education Center, Grenada Christmas in April, and Prevail Fund, Inc. The senior receiving the $1,000.00 scholarship was Kaitlyn Junkin.  No one went home empty handed, as the runners up received grants for $500.00 each and these included Mission Mississippi, Inc., Elizabeth Jones Library, and First Book, Grenada.  The three other seniors receiving $100.00 scholarships were Don Tartt, Jr., Courtney Simmons, and Hunter Roberts.  Everyone won on April  22, the biggest winner being the citizens of Grenada benefiting from results achieved through the work of the nonprofits and the seniors’ dreams of improving the world we live in beginning with Grenada.

If you missed the fun this year, become a member of GG365 now and join us in April 2014 to cast your vote.  The experience is awesome; to know that you have helped your neighbor by giving a dollar a day.  WOW.  Join us today and let’s give away more to our community in 2014!  Click on the donate now button at the top of the blog page or mail your check to GCF | 81 S Church Street | Grenada, MS 38901.
